Assaqutaq minicruise and humpback whales
In the 1960s and -70s several small settlements in Greenland were abandoned as people chose to move to the larger towns to find work and get the benefit of modern society.
Assaqutaq, beautifully situated on the south side foot of the Nasaasaaq Peak, is one of these settlements, a mere 20 minutes from Sisimiut by boat.
Today it is used as a summer camp for the local primary schools and particularly in June the place comes alive again as people from Sisimiut go there to fish the ammassat (capelin), which is a small fish of the salmon family cherished by people and sled dogs alike.
On the short walk through the settlement you see the old fish factory, the lovely little grave yard, the house currently used as a school summer camp, and the pretty old church.
Humpback whales
In the past 5-10 years large numbers of Humback whales have started visiting the coastline around Sisimiut to feed on ammasset (capelin). This means that we have very good opportunities to spot these magnificient and photogenic animals on this excursion.
Also there are sometimes the opportunity to view minke and finwhales, and it we’re that lucke we will of course pass by as close as possible while always maintaining a safe distance so as not to disturb these mighty deep sea creatures.
