Dogsledding the Arctic Circle Trail – big adventure
The dog sledge is an important part of the Greenlandic culture. In ancient times it was the only means of transportation in the winter months, when the land was covered with ice and snow.
And the Arctic Circle Trail is as fine a backcountry route as they come, and the 3 day ride between Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut is no less than a life time experience.
The conditions are similar to a real Arctic expedition but riding the Arctic Circle Trail means that you do it in a controlled environment where you can safely test your personal limits. There’s simply no better way to get that true backcountry feeling.
Along the way we usually sleep in hunting cabins, though you may have to spend the night in a tent as well (but not to worry – you can rent supercomfy sleeping bags from us).
The land out there is rugged and wild, but your driver will skillfully navigate his dogs through the mountains to give you a sense of the sheer size of a place where man must show the utmost respect for animals and the wilderness to thrive.
What’s more, on this trip you will become a part of the expedition team, participating in the daily work along the way, such as cooking, packing the sled, and feeding the dogs.
Stretches of the trip can be quite strenuous, and it requires that you’re in a reasonably good physical condition. Also, dogsled tours are not recommended for people with severe back problems, as they can be bumpy rides.
Please notice we require anyone riding the full Arctic Circle Trail to rent polar clothes (seal skin or down) and boots unless you have proper polar equipment yourself. Our staff will make the final call on whether you have proper clothes for this expedition or you need to rent from us. Gear rental prices are here.
