Ice Cap Crossing
In 1888 Nansen was the first man to cross the Greenland Ice Cap on skis, and since his pioneering adventure many have followed in his tracks, but even today only a select few achieve a level of excellence great enough to get them safely across the second largest glacier in the world.
DitEventyr provides expedition guides, training, and support to bring you across the 600 kms of vast white landscape from Kangerlussuaq in the west to Isortoq on the East Coast.
And if you understand that you can expect a tough climb to the top, nothing but white horizones, and plenty of less than perfect food, blisters, and howling winds, then you also know that behind the hardships lie one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
We cross the Ice Cap on skis, each person carrying a personal pulk with equipment, and it takes planning, hard work, and endurance to pull this off. So we reserve the right to turn down people who seem mentally or physically ill prepared for this kind if trip.
Before depature we meet to observe group dynamics, get to know each other, pack, and prepare mentally for the 30 days up on the ice. Crossing the Ice Cap is as much about the preparations and the group psychology as it is about the actual physical work.
Before leaving for Greenland we meet up twice to get the latest info, and once we’re on the ground in the Arctic we go on a training run where we test and hone our skiing and backcountry skills while making safety routines our first priority.
But don’t underestimate the walk itself and you have to complete training with skis and pulk to prepare for the trip, and we can help you put together a programme that will get you fit and ready.
We provide all shared equipment, tents, primuses, safety gear, and pulks. We send each participant a personal packing list when booking this trip, and we also go over every piece of gear before departure so everyone knows who’s bringing what.
The guides bring navigation equipment, GPS, a sat phone, an extended first aid kit, and other safety gear. We also get the required expedition permits and the mandatory travel insurance for this type of crossing.
