Minicruise to abandoned village and bird colony
The place with the small glacier – that’s what Sermilinnguaq means. But there’s nothing small about anything out here on this minicruise. In fact everything is as outsized as it comes in Greenland, with the sky, the alpine peaks, and the huge Hamborg Sound all vying for attention.
We cruise out of Maniitsoq and head north for Sermilinnguaq where a bird colony and a glacier are part of the healthy diet we take in before coming back to Ikkamiut, an old settlement now turned into a camp for school children.
Ikkamiut is just one of many such places now being worn down by time and the elements, and it speaks of a recent past where an even smaller population than today’s 56,000 people was much more dispersed and lived closer to the vital natural resources of the sea.
This is a 3-4 hour trip and the minimum requirement is 10 passengers.
We serve coffee, tea, soft drinks, and a sandwich or other lunch along the way.
