Musk Ox Safaris

Previous Next

Backcountry beasts

Herds of musk oxen roam freely in the Kangerlussuaq area, and this strange, but impressive, Arctic mammal seems tailor made for the rolling landscapes and wide open spaces.

The typical safari takes you in a 4WD truck through the tundra and along the river valleys, scouting out animals from afar and moving in with binoculars whenever possible.

But heading out in search of musk oxen is not just about wildlife. The enormous ice cap has carved out this landscape for everyone to enjoy with an abundance of wildflowers, streams, and lakes.

Kangerlusssuaq is unique in many ways and when it concerns land animals, no other place in Greenland can keep up. Especially the musk ox has an interesting story to tell in this area, and further more it is an impressive animal.

Kangerlussuaq is the place to be for musk oxen, and we believe this is the prime destination in all of Greenland for watching this wild animal enjoy the freedom of the vast backcountry. The musk oxen in Kangerlussuaq were originally introduced from a herd in East Greenland, and the landscape around on the West Coast was believed to be a benefit for the animal and since the arrival of the first animals in 1962 the population has grown into the thousands.
